An artistic juxtaposition of pavement, steel and grass

According to the highly detailed, colorfully painted, ornate bird-and-Olympics-themed head tube badge and the plain old seat tube sticker, this red Falcon Black Diamond road bike was designed by Ernie Clements and made in Lincolnshire, England of "Tru-Wel electrical resistance welded steel tubes".

My Falcon road bike needed parts like these. Yours probably does too.

The Falcon Black Diamond is an old ten-speed bicycle with a lugged steel frame and a low-end vintage road bike gruppo that includes Sakae Custom Road Champion handlebars, an SR New Alloy stem, Weinmann 610 center-pull brakes with "suicide" levers, Unishift shifters, Shimano Titlist front and Skylark rear derailleurs, Sugino Maxy alloy cranks, and steel wheels with steel hubs.

The head tube lugs on the Falcon road bike are nicely detailed. The paint is a deep red color, balanced by the bike's steel and alloy parts, black saddle and handlebar tape, and short chrome fork tips.

The chrome front sprocket trim ring has a red stripe around its outer edge, which may have been influenced by 1960s "red line" muscle car tires. The Black Diamond logo decal on the chainstay doesn't fit the bike's aesthetic, but it's too unobtrusive to notice.

Tasteful English frame

Falcon road bikes aren't as common in the U.S. as some of the more well-known vintage bicycles from the same era, like Fuji, Motobecane or Raleigh. But the Black Diamond appears to be as well-made as any of its French, English or Japanese contemporaries.

This Falcon Black Diamond was in pretty good condition, as far as vintage bicycles go. It had normal chips and wear to the paint, and it needed a good cleaning and thorough tune-up. But it was a solid little road bike, and it's probably still carrying someone around New York City today.
